Project Description
Ames Associates designed this $20 million Army Aviation Support Facility as a landmark facility for the Maine Army National Guard at Bangor International Airport.
Phase I contains six Blackhawk helicopter maintenance hangar bays in a new 33,100 SF wing and an additional 19,600 SF for four cold storage bays. All of the maintenance bays contain a fire prevention system, using the latest in aqueous foam fire-fighting; ultraviolet/infrared detectors to continuously monitor the hangars; and three high volume, skid-mounted water pumps capable of providing enough water to fill a high school swimming pool in five minutes.
Other designs provided on the site include a Fuel Pad Enclosure covering an existing fuel pad. The design provided a pre engineered steel cover with six overhead doors on both sides to accommodate the tank trucks.
Phase II was designed as a Bronze Level Green Building with the Army Environmental Codes (SPiRiT) and new anti-terrorism standards. The exterior is a state-of-the-art steel framed, insulated metal panel envelope. Extensive renovations were required for the existing hangar to meet current code standards and replace existing mechanical and electrical systems.
