University of Maine Aquaculture Research Facility

Autoplay: Off

Project Description
Ames Associates faced the challenge of designing this facility with considerable research into appropriate building systems for an aquaculture facility. Foremost was the need to find building systems capable of withstanding the high humidity and consistently wet conditions found in an aquacultural environment. The walls and ceiling need to be very smooth for daily washing and of construction materials least likely to support mold growth. Absolute integrity of the vapor barrier is required to prevent migration of moisture to within the structural system, which undetected, could promote deterioration. Structurally, a clear span of 80 feet accommodates tanks and allows for flexibility of tank location.
